Language Disorders

Children with language disorders may have problems understanding or using semantics (vocabulary), syntax (the order of sentences), morphology (grammar), and/or pragmatics (use of language in social context). 

Symptoms can include:

• word finding difficulty

• grammar errors

• incorrect formulation of sentences

• difficulty understanding words

• an overall inability to express ideas and thoughts

Language therapy can be highly effective in treating these disorders.  Therapy begins with evaluation of the language disorder.  Thorough assessment can illuminate the exact areas of language that require treatment, as not all areas may be involved.  Treatment is then targeted at the specific deficit(s). 

The earlier language disorders are treated the better.  Early intervention can be highly effective at remediating the problem, and warding off problems in school later in life.  If you suspect that your child may have a language disorder trust your instincts and schedule him or her for an evaluation with a speech-language pathologist.
